Michelle Hunter more than just talking, Michelle is doing. Assisting Erica and Chris Saunders, we all need a Hugging hand from time to time.

Michelle Hunter, her former colleague and friend, started a fundraising campaign for the family last Friday. In the first five days it’s raised more than $1,500. The goal is $4,000.

Erica Saunders, 25, needs a life-saving heart surgery. The operation is scheduled for March 27, and it will be the third one the mother of three and recent newlywed will have undergone.

The Fredericton native was born with aortic stenosis, which caused her main heart valve not to develop. At age 11, she underwent her first surgery. The second took place four years ago when she received a bovine valve replacement. It gave her 21⁄2 years of great health, she said.

Then she became pregnant with her third child. The additional blood flow during her pregnancy placed too much strain on the valve. It’s left her short of breath and the smallest of exertion is potentially deadly, she said.

“I’m on complete bed rest. The valve could let go at any time now,” she said.

Now, Saunders said, she’s waiting for her next surgery, which will reconstruct her aortic tissue and aortic valve.

Her declining health forced her to stop working last October. Her medical employment insurance has since run out. Chris Saunders, her husband, works full time but they’re struggling financially.

“It’s really not something I should be worrying about because my blood pressure is high already,” she said.

“People say they don’t want to go to work, but I would love to be able to go to work. As soon as I get healed, I will be right back to work.”

Chris Saunders is feeling the strain. He worries about whether she’s okay while he’s at work, he said.

The family moved from Fredericton to Saint John after he had a job transfer. She said it’s difficult to be away from Fredericton because many of their family members and friends are here.

“The one bonus is that the heart centre’s here,” Erica Saunders said.

She worries about dying and almost didn’t survive her last operation, she said, noting she was pronounced clinically dead and was revived by her surgeon on the operating table.

“All of a sudden my heart stopped. My surgeon tried everything to get my heart started again. He had to reopen the incision and put a metal clamp in to spread the valve open to save my life,” Saunders said.

“Surgery isn’t what scares me. It’s not knowing if I’m going to wake up.”

She and her husband have spent a lot of time talking about what could happen if the surgery isn’t successful. Chris Saunders said that’s included a conversation about the possibility she might not survive the operation.

“I’ve had to make plans that I shouldn’t have to make at our age. We moved from Fredericton to Saint John a little over a year ago and our support system is in Fredericton and my immediate family is in Philadelphia,” he said.

They’ve been together nine years but just got married in December. She too worries about what will happen to her husband and their girls if she doesn’t make it, she said.

“He said, ‘What happens if this is the last few weeks we have together?’ I don’t know how to answer that. How do I comfort him knowing I have the same fear?”

Their three daughters are seven, five and 18 months. She and her husband are trying to be strong for their children. Mackenzie and Jordyn will be going to Pennsylvania to be with her husband’s parents while their youngest, Peyton, remains at home with her dad.

Hunter said she hopes donations will take the financial pressure off the family.

“Going from two full-time incomes down to one with three children is very hard,” Hunter said.

The couple said they’re grateful for the financial and emotional support they’re receiving as they go through this difficult time.

Chris Saunders said they don’t like to ask people for help but the financial contributions people are making is helping take some of the burden from them at this time.

We received some huggable feedback today and we always welcome feedback and visits from our huggable customers!

Although I enjoyed doing business with Jim and Huggable Wheels and Deals, we have moved to the other side of the Country and now currently live on Vancouver Island in Victoria BC. About 2 years after we purchased the Dodge Caravan we were posted by the Military. Needless to say the Van enabled my wife and our girls (3 1/2 , 3 1/2 and 18 months) a safe and memorable drive across Canada.

Regardless had we stayed in the local area we would have continued business with Jim and Huggable Wheels and Deals. Service was always commendable, friendly and trustworthy. I knew if I wasn’t available to have maintenance done and my wife took in the van she would have been taken care of as if she was family. For that I thank you all.

Will Venator, one of our Sales & Finance Consultants, visited the Independent Living 110 classes at Leo Hayes High School on May 29, 2013 as a guest speaker. As a seasoned sales professional, Will used his knowledge and experience to talk to the students and answer their questions about building and maintaining credit, making vehicle purchases, and financing. The students had the following feedback for Will about his presentation.

  • I now know how to keep my credit up. I will be making a lot of payments on time.
  • Over all he is a great presenter. He did good explaining what credit is and how to buy a car. After his presentation, I had a good understanding of what credit was and how to use it.
  • He’s a really good speaker and knows a lot about money and how it works.
  • He really knows what he’s talking about. He has a lot of good information and facts. He gave examples without being asked and explained everything really well.
  • He really knew what he was talking about. He really taught me a lot about cars and a bit about credit. The presentation was really useful.
  • You can tell that he really knows what he is talking about. He made everything sound interesting. He had a lot of excitement and enthusiasm in his voice. I like how he linked things together and he gave examples without being asked. Everything he told us is information that we need to know. It’s not boring!
  • This was great info because I didn’t realize how fragile it was. I realize how important it is to keep good credit.
  • I really think that  this presentation had some great information on credit and on buying a car. It taught me to start thinking and building credit now instead of when I am in my 20s. I also learned that here is a lot to consider before buying a car.
  • I really thought that he explained everything really well. I understand credit a little bit better now.
  • Very good at speaking in front of people and kept me at attention.
  • I thought that it was really interesting to listen to. There was some information that I think I might end up using some time in my life.

I found the dealership to be above average , the ambiance and decor exceptional ,especially for a used car dealership that are usually less fancy. I liked that all the vehicles were left unlocked and i could access them without a sales person looking over my shoulder. My dealings with Dustin and Megan ( i think that was her name) were very professional , i found they were very knowledgeable and helpful.I have and would recommend your dealership, what will get me over into your lot and recommend others to do the same will be after care , if i need to go back how will the service be , time will tell.I just happened upon your car lot , i went to Fredericton to look at another  truck that was advertised on Kiji by a ford dealer. I never even looked or thought about your dealership until i drove by and saw the line up of trucks. Had we not driven to Fredericton that evening we would have missed the opportunity to buy this truck .I will probably be back as we are soon going to be looking for a new SUV.

Douglas… 10 – When we started looking again for a car we went to new and used dealers all over town. For us, we enjoy driving through the lot, getting out and looking at a particular car and then going on our way. At every other dealership the moment I stepped out of the car someone was there pressuring me for information and trying to pawn a card of theirs off on me. I was even approached as I was driving through a lot and had to stop as he stood in front of my car. The times I came to Jim’s I was able to drive through without hassle, Salesmen were always visible and I knew they would be available if I had any questions. Visible but not pestering, that’s why I come back.

I’ve bought 4 cars from Jims over 6 years and will trade these 2 in next year. Even though it’s a couple years between dealing with John it’s like we just talked yesterday.

Good morning,       I want to take a few minutes and share my experience with my vehicle purchase. I know your team sells many vehicles every week. For myself, this was my first vehicle purchase in many years that was not a private sale, and my very first “New” car. Dustin was amazing right from the start. He contacted me much quicker than I expected and from the very start turned a “purchase” into an “experience”. He and I played a bit of phone tag over the next couple of days and he put a lot of effort into making sure I had all of my bases covered before I came to your store. Understanding that I work in Florenceville and would need to pick up the family after work in Bloomfield and travel to Fredericton on a school night, Dustin had all of the details covered and made sure I had all the paperwork I needed to have me drive down in my old clunker and home in my new car. Your store is so neat, tidy, and visually appealing. I swore you did some 5S training with your team. Everything was like in a commercial. I appreciated that there were Nintendo DS’s there to entertain the kids and popcorn to snack on while we did the paperwork, because we were pretty tired from the day and the trip. Definitely a 10.  I purchased my first vehicle through John when I first moved to the area in the fall of 2008.  I was so impressed that he never made me feel pressured to make the purchase.  He patiently gave me the time to make the decision.  I vowed then, that the next time I was to purchase a vehicle, I would seek him out.  So, here we are 4 1/2 years later and I did just that.  Once again, there was no pressure.  I met with him and explained what I was looking for and in less than a week he had one for me to test drive that surpassed my expectations.  I am so pleased, this is the nicest, classiest vehicle I have ever driven.
